Anyway, I read Deep Trouble by Mary Connealy during the first leg of my trip last week. What a delight, as I journeyed across the country, to read about a similar journey
- Only I was in air-conditioned comfort instead of being sweat-cooled from a dry breeze.
- And my body lounged on a cushioned seats, with extra pillows and blankets available, instead of sitting astride a bony-backed horse.
- Also, I traveled through lush green landscapes with plenty of water, lots of snacks, clean restrooms and electronic entertainment, rather than going at a snail's pace through the desert with little to drink, less to eat, and I don't even need to address to other two areas!
Deep Trouble traces the journey of Shannon Dysart, the daughter of a man most believe to be crazy. Shannon believes him a genius and sets out to prove that his life work, locating a city of gold, is viable and worthy of respect. Unfortunately, the folks she hires to help her along this trip are less than dependable and leave her stranded in the middle of the desert.
Gabe Lasley is a wanderer, having trouble settling down, with no real desire or ambition for anything. He gets stuck assisting Shannon on her trek, something he thinks is sheer insanity. With trouble tracking them, they are faced with choices between their survival and more gold than they could imagine. Add to that the complications of commitments and struggles to remain true to their faith and you have a wonderfully woven story.
Ms. Connealy charges through the old west with determination and clever detail. She paints an amazing canvas against the beauty of the Grand Canyon.
Historical Fiction isn't generally a genre I read, so I don't have other experiences to compare this book to. What was the last historical you read and what was your favorite thing about it?
I read Jody Hedlund's - The Preacher's Bride - earlier this summer. I loved her writing. I never strayed away and felt like I was there throughout the read.

Sounds like a fun read! I read Jody's book, The Preacher's Bride, as well.
